We’re reviewing the book because we think it’s great. Period.

Why Do We Care?

As readers of this blog know, we own a film and television production company, Joke Productions.

While we’ve had a few films in theaters, most of our work appears on good, old fashioned TV.

Even though we’re one of the youngest production companies out there, and even though YouTube blew up right at the time we should’ve been a part of it — well, we weren’t.

We were fortunate enough to start selling shows to TV networks, and never really looked back.

Never really got to be friends with YouTube.

Could 30 Days to a Better YouTube Channel make us friends?

YouTube: More Than Just The Future

There’s no doubt YouTube has played a huge role in how people are consuming media, especially teens.

While many of our industry cohorts may think YouTube is for “second stringers” we couldn’t disagree more.

While no one can predict what YouTube will do to TV in the future, it’s clear that talented people have embraced the platform.

Just as we embraced new technology to launch our own career almost a decade ago (when DV was new tech!) we believe YouTube is an incredible tool for creatives, both “old school” and “new school” to change the ways stories are told.

30 Days to a Better YouTube Channel can help both kinds of people to do just that.

We’ve Told Many of You to “Go YouTube.”

Yes, the main point of this site is to help you team up with us to get your TV concepts on air (as we’ve done with numerousprojectsbefore), but sometimes the pitches we get just won’t work for a TV network, and we tell folks, “Maybe it’s a web series.”

But the truth is we don’t know that much about YouTube.

We make TV shows.

A Listener Comment

One of our podcast listeners, Jack Decker pointed out that we could do more with our JokeAndBiagio YouTube Channel.

And he’s right.

Sure, we’ve uploaded occasional behind the scenes videos from our shows, like this Youtube playlist for our VH1 show Scream Queens, but we’ve never really tried to do anything to work with our channel itself.

We never really stopped to think about it.

Enter Tim Schmoyer and Video Creators TV

Realizing we were at risk of becoming the “old guard” (yikes) and waking up one day to realize we had no idea how to embrace YouTube and the millions of teens now watching more online video than TV, we did some Googling and found the terrific Youtube Channel Video Creators TV.

It’s Tim’s YouTube channel, and proof positive he should be writing a book named 30 Days to a Better YouTube Channel.

Not only does Tim have hundreds (thousands?) of free videos answering just about every YouTube question you could ask, he just launched his brand new book:

30 Days to a Better Youtube Channel Promo Video.

Hefty Price?

We don’t think so, but hey, let’s be honest: we haven’t been too worried about the price of a book for a while.

We DO remember what it’s like to be living in a one bedroom apartment and eating Ramen noodles three times a day. So we GET that some of you are where we were back then — questioning every purchase and hoping to make the right choice.

That said, what Tim has done is organize so many, many disparate threads on how to work with YouTube right now – today – in 2014 – that the time you’d waste trying to find it all easily justifies the $29.95 price tag.

Tim, clearly believing in his book, wisely gives away the first “three days” of his book free.

Why We Love 30 Days to a Better YouTube Channel

The book itself clearly, cleanly covers four main areas of improving your YouTube Channel:

  1. A channel strategy: How your YouTube channel presents itself to a viewer.
  2. A search and discovery strategy: How viewers find out about your channel.
  3. An audience development strategy: How you intend to capture a viewer’s interest and turn them into an integral part of your channel’s community.
  4. A video strategy: How you plan to execute the aforementioned strategies with your content.

Each of the 30 days break down into three, reader-friendly parts:

  1. A Teaching: Instruction on both the why and the how of the task of the day.
  2. A Task: Something to do that will lead to a more subscribable YouTube channel.
  3. Resources: Links and stories that help you dive deeper into any task.

The teachings and the tasks are great, the resources are priceless.

You’d spend a lot of time Googling to gather and organize all the great links Tim’s put together.

How You’ll Use This Book

If you’re one of the people who we’ve told to “Go Youtube” Tim’s resources are a great place to start. His book will help you build a community around your passion project, expose people to your work, and bring you real people who are interested in your work.

How We’ll Use Tim’s Book

As mentioned, our current YouTube channel is a bit of a mish-mosh of interesting videos with no real context.

Heck, our shiny new slideshow version of our podcast isn’t even ON YouTube yet:

(By the way, NO, this is NOT the geeky project we talked about on our last podcast ep. But more of these will be coming to our YouTube Channel soon.)

We’re going to follow Tim’s advice and re-brand the channel, providing you:

  • answers to your questions
  • tutorials on pithing TV shows
  • software tips specific to making reality TV and documentary series
  • tips on making great pitch tapes – the kind that sell TV shows.

We’re also going to target talented YouTube creators and encourage them to pitch TV shows to us.

So these tips from Tim’s book will come in handy:

  • Create compelling channel art
  • Make a great channel trailer
  • Better utilize playlists
  • Pick the right keywords
  • Honestly, everything else in his book

30 Days to a Better YouTube Channel

If you’re a YouTube newbie, or like us, a YouTube user who’s never made the most of Youtube, this book is for you.

If you’re already a YouTube expert, the book may or may not be your cup of tea.

In either case, fortunately, as mentioned above, you can download the first three days (which includes the entire table of contents) free.

In our estimation, this is a timely, credible, and important book about making the most of YouTube. Not to be missed.

Great job, Tim!
